Abstract
It is well known that corrosion has a significant impact on sustainment, system costs, and system availability to the warfighter. Mitigating such impacts is one of the greatest drivers to DoD Science &Technology (S&T) requirements and therefore research programs. The US Air Force Academy’s Center for Aircraft Structural Life Extension (CAStLE) is an entirely customer-funded DoD research entity which, through its close ties with the USAF sustainment community, has constant insight into the S&T challenges that are most critical to USAF system managers. In close cooperation with their customers, CAStLE develops and executes research projects that successfully address these S&T challenges with appropriate products, data, and tools in a budget-constrained environment. This presentation will offer an overview of some of the current coatings related research along with some coatings successes in war against corrosion.
