This paper will address both existing and new air barrier technology. Manufacturers, engineers, architects, trade professionals, and testing agencies will learn essential features of this emerging industry. Manufacturers will learn about the material properties and product performance requirements of air barrier coatings. Engineers and architects will learn basic building science principals required to create an air barrier utilizing coatings. We will present testing methods used to measure compliance with specifications and codes. Addressing the background and history of the air barrier industry over the last 40 years and the development of materials and assemblies as well as whole building air tightness requirements and will explain where coatings have found a unique niche within the market. The paper is not comprehensive in dealing in any topic but rather is meant to serve as a wide angle lens to portray the headline concerns and considerations of which manufactures, designers, and contractors and installers must be aware to successfully enter the thin-coating AVB market.
