The paper describes the field metalizing of two existing high level bridges for Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 2. The authors Mr. Don Buwalda of FDOT and Mr. Greg Richards with KTA-Tator, Inc. participated in the projects through coating assessments, design, construction, and construction inspection. The paper discusses the project design, economic considerations, specification development, field construction, and the lessons learned.

These structures were the first metalizing, sealing, and top coat applications that FDOT utilized as the primary corrosion control for existing steel in-place bridge structures. The lessons learned will assist districts in Florida and other owners make sound decisions when choosing coating systems for bridge maintenance and rehabilitation projects.
