Abstract
Silicone alkyds have been utilized by the Navy for over 50 years and remain the only single-component technology that is qualified under MIL-PRF-24635. Although the predominant coating in the Fleet, silicone alkyd coatings continue to provide poor color and gloss retention, poor chemical resistance, low hardness, slow cure times and limited cleanability to running rust. To address these issues, the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has recently designed and patented a novel single-component (1K) polysiloxane coating for Navy topsides. When tested in the laboratory, the coating has demonstrated exceptional color stability, hardness, solvent resistance and adhesion that rivals silicone alkyds, in addition to out-performing the recently qualified two-component (2K) polysiloxane topside coatings with respect to color stability. The new coating is currently being demonstrated on several Navy surface ships.
