Characteristics of the rapid cure non-skid coating systems for the highly stressed area, exposed deck of the marine vessels were studied in order to establish an advanced coating system with higher cracking resistance. Some previous non-skid epoxy based coating systems for marine vessels suffered premature coating failure such as crack and delamination due to the lower fracture elongation of the coating accompanied with higher external stress. Hybrid coating systems with polyurethane and polyurea mixture for higher fracture elongation were formulated and evaluated if the coating system would be applicable to the highly stressed area. It was found that the polyurethane and polyurea coating system employed in this study showed higher fracture elongation with the rapid curing time less than 4 hrs. It was also found that the coating system indicated an acceptable adhesion even in case of tool cleaning.
