The fundamental purpose of protective coatings and linings has always been the protection of structures from the degradation due to environmental and service conditions. While that remains to be the case, coatings are increasingly evaluated on their environmental, health, and safety effects as well as the various operational efficiencies they offer. The more common EH&S concerns include:

  • Air emissions from Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) and Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAP’s)

  • Toxicity concerns based on the formula constituents (including heavy metals, known and suspected carcinogenic compounds, and leachable organic compounds into potable water and food grade systems

  • Solid waste and hazardous waste generation

  • Flammability issues

  • Personnel exposure issues such as odor complaints, dermatitis, and allergic reactions
