Solvent free epoxy coatings are not new in the market place. The first ones were developed in the 1960s, principally as pipe coatings. Over the years, the formulations have advanced and the number of applications has increased, especially in the area of linings for ship or land storage tanks. Particularly in recent years, much emphasis has been placed on environmental regulation compliance and health and safety issues in the coating industry. In this regard the spotlight has been shone on solvent free epoxies because of their zero or very low Volatile Organic Content (VOC) and the reduced explosion risks when working in confined spaces. However, outside of regulatory compliance, solvent free epoxies can also offer some very real long-term performance benefits for the ship or facility owner. This paper will explore some of the inherent properties of solvent free epoxy coatings and the performance benefits that these can bring.
