On November 1, 2000, the National Football League named the city of Jacksonville, Florida as the site for the 2005 Super Bowl. As a port city on the St. John’s River, the largest river in Florida, Jacksonville is the location of some of the largest bridges in the state. With an estimated influx of over 100,000 visitors and a projected economic impact of $300 million resulting from hosting this event, the Florida Department of Transportation quickly initiated a plan for “sprucing up” major steel bridges in Jacksonville for the occasion. This paper provides a history of the planning and design of the rehabilitation of the Hart Bridge (3,867 ft in length) and the Main Street Bridge (1,690 ft in length). Planning, condition assessment of the existing coating systems on the structures, specification development, and the special considerations associated with these high profile projects will be presented.
