Dust collection technology has been used in the industrial painting industry since the early 1990’s, together with elaborate containment systems, for three primary reasons: to increase visibility, reduce worker exposures to lead and other toxic metals, and to prevent environmental contamination as a result of the paint removal process.

While the specification and use of dust collector technology is now common place, little is known relative to the actual selection, operation, and maintenance of this equipment. This paper discusses the types of dust collectors used in the industrial painting industry, types of filters that are used, maintenance of the equipment, and recommendations for better selection and verification of the effectiveness of this equipment.
