Shell Exploration and Production owns and operates around 100 structures in the Gulf of Mexico. A large number of these fields are considered to be mature assets. Traditional multi-coat systems applied to a near white metal surface preparation can not be economically justified for these assets due to the high cost of application. Therefore, it is desirable to identify and implement low cost coatings that are able to withstand the harsh environment in the Gulf. Application of one-coat coatings would significantly reduce the cost of protecting the integrity of the offshore assets. The one-coat coating candidates were evaluated by the simplified test protocol. The original test protocol was developed for multi-coat systems. This simplified test protocol can also assist vendors to develop high performance products.
