Abstract
Failure analysis is examined as a tool for designing coating systems for concrete and writing specifications to meet performance expectations. The intended function of the coating system is compared to common imperfections, which may or may not be acceptable depending upon the intended use. Some of the most frequently encountered modes of failure are discussed from a perspective of cause and prevention.
