Graffiti has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In recent times, Graffiti has gained widespread visual attention, most of it unwanted. Graffiti vandals may believe that their actions harm no one, yet the reality is that their work invites gang violence and a sharp decline in property values.

Although definitive figures for clean up costs are difficult to come by, figures from a variety of cities across USA suggest that graffiti clean up costs communities anywhere from $1 to $3 per person. In a 2006 survey of 88 cities, Caltrans and Metro in Los Angeles County found that it cost about $28 million for graffiti removal. With a population of close to 10 million, the per capita cost is about $2.80. 1  The resulting cost has prompted many communities across USA to institute laws that make it a crime to deface property without the owner’s permission.

In a continuing effort to discourage Graffiti vandalism, barrier coatings have begun to find widespread usage. A variety of polymeric materials have found widespread commercial acceptance as barrier coatings. In this respect Silicone Elastomeric coatings offer many property advantages that make them stand out as a solution to easy and swift removal of graffiti tagging left behind by vandals.
