When Marsden Point Oil Refinery in New Zealand needed to reline 3 steel crude oil storage tanks, Figure 1, the engineers began a search for a lining with the necessary properties to provide a long-term solution. Figure 2 is a schematic of a typical crude oil storage tank at the facility. The existing liners had failed in many areas, allowing severe corrosion of the carbon steel tanker, Figure 3. Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) scans of the steel showed a significant loss of steel thickness due to corrosion, in some areas greater than 25%. The internal linings that had been previously installed ranged in age from 12 to 15 years old and had failed over the entire floor area and 1 meter (~3.281 feet) up the sidewall. One of the 3 tanks was heated as it stored heavy crude.

Gregory M. Severyn is a 20+-year employee of Sauereisen, Inc., a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA based manufacturer of corrosion-resistant materials of construction as well as specialty cements. Greg is also a 1980 graduate of Duke University. Within his employment history he has been involved with both domestic and international sales to the Power, Chemical, Petrochemical, Steel, and Municipal Wastewater industries. His current position, Business Development Manager, provides him with the task of developing the European and Pacific Rim corrosion markets.
Greg Wiggins
Greg Wiggins has over 25 years experience in the industrial coatings industry analysing corrosion problems, determining corrosion causes and designing solutions to deliver long-term protection. He has a background in sales and technical service to the petrochemical, power, water and wastewater, mechanical and general engineering environments. Greg is a member of the Australasian Corrosion Association and a qualified ACA Coatings Inspector. Greg is also a member of a number of other industry related organisations including the New Zealand Water and Wastes Association.
In 2004 Greg formed Pacific Concrete Protection Ltd (PCP) to primarily focus on providing solutions for the protection and rehabilitation of surfaces from chemical or physical attack in wastewater and other aggressive environments. PCP is the New Zealand and Pacific region licensee for the SAUEREISEN Inc USA range of chemically resistant cementicious and organic polymer products specializing in the protection and restoration of tanks, sumps, pipes, manholes and structures in wastewater environments.
