The use of passive fire protection (PFP) materials play an integral role in mitigating fire risk in commercial buildings. Traditional application of these materials has been on-site following the erection of structural steel. Their mechanical durability, exposure to weather and in-flexibility have been a major concern for construction managers and architects. Shop application of epoxy intumescent fireproofing has been an established construction practice in the petrochemical industry for over 20 years and is making significant in-roads on commercial projects in Europe. This paper will describe the in-shop process and outline the benefits provided by the applicator to the owner, architect and construction manager.
