Abstract
Formulators of these coatings need to address the legislations strongly pushing toward lower VOC content. All around the World, Governments, Paint Manufacturers and Applicators are still discussing viable options, though there is no doubt that challenges related to higher solids content in coating formulations will continue to increase. As developers of a key performance ingredient into these type of coatings, we continue to follow this trend by developing a range of Rheology Modifiers / thickeners with specific products for very high solids and solvent free (100%) protective and marine coatings. For “less” demanding industrial coatings, waterborne systems are seen as trendier but still pushes formulators to consider formulations with high corrosion requirements (up to C4).
VOC levels are not the only challenging parameter for formulators, having to find the best compromise between ease of application, cost and protection. In that context, Rheology Modifiers become an essential ingredient. By formulating with the appropriate Polyamide based Rheology Modifiers, application viscosity of high solids and solvent free coatings are reduced to the level of conventional solventborne coatings and application thickness increased to obtain the dry film thickness in One-pass instead of two. Ongoing projects also include development of Rheology Modifiers to provide the same benefits in waterborne industrial coatings.
In this context, Rheology Modifiers developed by Arkema for very high solids and solvent free coatings will be presented through relevant case studies
