Recently, there have been overwhelming process improvements in direct assessment (DA) programs due to NACE structured DA trainings, success in the integration of inline inspection (ILI) and DA, and enhancements in data collection methodologies, the presentation and interpretation of data, dig selection methodology, the high probability of detection (POD) of anomalies, and the perfect correlation of predicted and actual dig observations. Despite these remarkable improvements, some operators are still not confident about using DA to assess the integrity of their assets. This paper examines recent process improvements and substantiates the arguments presented using comprehensive case studies, discussions on process improvements, practical experiences and lessons learnt.
