Abstract
Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) is considered a serious threat. So far, protective coatings have been considered the main countermeasure against CUI. However, measures to prevent CUI should not only include protective coatings but also thermal insulation materials (TIM) and jacketing materials. While a previous study focused on the ability of protective coatings to prevent CUI1, this study focused, instead, on the ability of TIM to prevent CUI. In this study, various TIM types were evaluated using the same vertical pipe test that was used in the previous study1. That vertical pipe test creates a cyclic corrosive environment conducive to the occurrence of CUI. Based on the results of that test in this study and on those from the previous study, the ability of various combinations of protective coatings and TIM types to prevent CUI is presented in this paper.
