Abstract
The coatings industry today is facing a myriad of issues in maintaining the offshore platform and assets. Currently in the Gulf of Mexico, most operators are severely behind on the progress of maintaining these assets from corrosion. Through the use of inefficient specifications, less than desirable coating performance, and the lack of maintenance and inspection on these operating facilities; many have fallen into a state of neglect. With the increasing regulations and audits from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), many operators are struggling to keep up with the changes. This paper will cover the background of these changes, the reasons why many coatings and fireproofing systems prematurely fail, and also the solutions that may help address these issues that many operators face today.
