Abstract
Many laboratory corrosion salt spray test methods require or recommend measurements of the mass loss of standardized metal panels, also called corrosion coupons, as a means of adjusting chamber control systems. The purpose is to ensure repeatable and reproducible corrosive conditions inside test chambers and comparable results between laboratories. However, information on the validity of this technique and the critical variables for its use has been lacking. A series of experiments was conducted to examine the repeatability of corrosion rates of various coupons, cleaning procedures prior to exposure inside a test chamber, and removal of corrosion byproducts after their exposure.
