Epoxy resin based coatings have been used for many years to line the inside of chemical storage tanks and process vessels due to their good thermal and chemical-resistant properties in Oil & Gas industry applications. They are particularly suited for services that require resistance to hydrocarbons, water immersion, caustics and acids. A number of paint manufacturers and coating formulators are working on this area to develop new products to meet the ever-increasing challenging requirements.

A unique low VOC and high solids epoxy system has been designed, that offers superior performance in tank liner applications. The formulation of these novel materials in high temperature high chemical-resistant ambient cure tank liners will be described. Various performance aspects of experimental and commercial benchmarks will be compared, including multiple chemicals immersion tests at high temperature, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cathodic disbondment tests at elevated temperatures, and high temperature high pressure autoclave testing. The range of conditions under which this high solids system can be applied and good performance achieved will also be summarized.
