With more than half a decade of experience in oil sands coarse tailings and hydrotransport lines, internal pipe coatings made from high performance polyurethane elastomer coatings have proven to substantially extend the design life of slurry pipelines. Life extension is significantly higher in situations where erosion-corrosion conditions prevail in that under these conditions, bare carbon steel experiences rapid wall loss and often, alloyed steels or chromium carbide / tungsten carbide overlays are used to mitigate erosion-corrosion. However, such metallic solutions may be prone to erosion-corrosion and in such instances, abrasion resistant elastomers that strongly adhere to the pipe wall may prove to be the preferred mitigation.

With the introduction in 2015 of a non-intrusive continuous wear monitoring system for polymeric internal pipe coatings, maintenance intervals can be optimized even further.

This presentation will report on field experience with high performance polyurethane elastomer coatings and with the non-intrusive wear monitoring system.
