In this work, a series of tin-free self-polishing antifouling paints with different composition were prepared to study the factors influencing the release rate of copper by atomic absorption spectrometer. The paint consisted of zinc acrylate copolymer, cuprous oxide, rosin resin, iron oxide red, zinc oxide, talc powder, fumed silica and solvent. Zinc acrylate copolymer and cuprous oxide were used as matrix resin and main biocide respectively. Rosin resin was used as release auxiliaries of fouling agents. Iron oxide red, zinc oxide and talc powder were used as pigments and fillers. The influence factors of copper release rate, such as additive amount of cuprous oxide and rosin resin were studied respectively. The experiential results showed that the copper release rate rose significantly with the additive amount of cuprous oxide and rosin resin increasing from small dosage to about 24wt% and 11.4wt% respectively and after that level the rise of the copper release rate became slightly. The influence factors of fillers and pigments dosage such as Iron oxide red and zinc oxide were also studied, and it showed no obvious affect. In summary, the copper release rates of the several prepared paint formulations ranged from 4.2μg•cm-2•d-1 to 46.5μg•cm-2•d-1 and the physical and mechanical properties of all the studied paint formulations could satisfy the related national standards of China. So this work has some guiding significance in the development of tin-free self-polishing antifouling paints.
