Through the application of Risk Based Inspection analysis (RBI) at a gas sweeting plant in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), process variables and materials of construction are considered to identify the type of damage that can lead to failure. The analysis was performed for the gas processing (Gas Treatment) unit where the API RBI program was utilized. The analysis demonstrated that all major equipment included in the assessments are in low stable risk while stainless steel piping has a high potential risk of Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (ClSCC). As a result, items with a high probability of failure and subsequent impact are given a higher priority for inspection than items that are of low impact, allowing for a more rational application of inspection resources. To mitigate the risk in the stainless steel pipes, the study recommended to implement additional inspection plans to oversee the potential crack damage. By applying such mitigation plans, the possibility of extending the T&I cycle from 5 years to 7 years was also considered.
