Abstract
Hydraulic riser tensioning systems on offshore drilling platforms include large piston rods. These are normally coated with thermally sprayed metallic/ceramic coatings primarily to enhance the wear properties of the rod. Such systems are exposed to severe operating and corrosive conditions and the coating must also be capable of withstand this harsh environment. Today there are no international standards and acceptance criteria for qualifying piston rod materials for use in hydraulic materials. This paper presents a guideline for materials selection and qualification of wear and corrosion protective surface coating materials for offshore application of piston rods in hydraulic systems. The guideline is also applicable to other components utilizing hard face coating materials as wear coatings.
