Liquid biocides have been and remain popular for control of microorganisms in industrial water systems. Numerous options exist in both the oxidizing and non-oxidizing biocide categories. Sodium hypochlorite (with and without added bromide) remains popular, particularly for large heavy industrial systems where high product turnover and regular monitoring can compensate for the significant loss in product activity that inevitably occurs.

We report here the development of a new liquid product based on bromine chloride as the active ingredient. The activity of the new product approaches that of fresh, “off-the-line” bleach while still delivering the benefits of a stabilized bromine system. In order to achieve a balance of acceptable low temperature performance (low freeze point) with good activity retention, computer-designed experiments were performed and a new technology was developed.
