An introduction to the new ISO standard 155889-2 is presented (1). A more detailed review will be given to the background for selection of parameters such as:

  • Protection potentials for CRA materials

  • Temperature effects of protection potentials

  • Current density requirements

  • Coating breakdown factors

The second part of the paper will present the practical application of the new criteria for largest submarine pipeline ever been installed from gas fields in the Norwegian Sea to the UK marked.
