The increased drive in the Oil and Gas Industry towards reducing costs but at the same time decreasing the risks to the operation, the environment and safety has imposed considerable demands on corrosion inhibition technology and chemical management.

This paper summarises some of the activities over the past 10 – 15 years that have led to an improved understanding of the factors that constrain inhibitor performance both with respect to new field developments and mature assets. A better understanding of these issues provides the basis for establishing more effective inhibition treatments in the future. Some suggestions for future studies are also provided.
