The current treating strategy in a South Texas Gas field has been to use chemical treatment to prevent carbon dioxide corrosion in wells and pipelines but not to use chemicals in erosive situations. Previous work has indicated that specially developed corrosion inhibitors have substantially reduced erosion corrosion in laboratory situations. In this work the field use of such an inhibitor was found to substantially reduce corrosion rates as measured by electrical resistance probes. The use of chemical to reduce erosion corrosion rates has important implications in fields with production facility constraint or in areas with fluctuating market demand for gas.
