Abstract
An owner’s perspective and case study on long-term durability requirements for a reinforced concrete structure exposed to the aggressive marine environment of the Arabian Gulf - and implementation of a corrosion monitoring system as a key performance indicator for long-term integrity.
This paper describes the background of repairs at Dubai Drydocks; the nature of anaerobic (i.e. below grade) and macro-cell corrosion of reinforced concrete structures; objectives and details of the corrosion monitoring system being implemented; considerations made for the eventual application of cathodic protection; and early corrosion monitoring results. It is intended that extended measurement data will be published in the future to supplement this paper as a case study.
