Nowadays there are some ecological restrictions made on the application of many corrosion inhibitors (CIs), and, hence, the combinations of the environmentally safe CIs with conversion coatings (CCs) can be more effective. Two main applications of CIs for enhancing protective properties of CCs are discussed. These are their use as components of a converting means and passivation of already prepared CC. It is shown with the oxidation of a low-carbon steel and aluminum alloy as examples that CIs allow one to make this process more ecologically safe. Some peculiarities of the applications of CIs in the rust converters, and for improving the protective properties of phosphate films on metals are considered. The possibilities of treatment of CC-protected metal surface with an aqueous passivating formulation containing effective CIs to increase its corrosion resistance and environmental safety of the technological chain are discussed. It is underlined that the search for ways to manage the polymerization CIs in thin adsorption layers can become a new efficient direction of their application for improving CCs.
