Corrosion inhibitor performance tests showed that dispersions (emulsions) of oil droplets in water could reduce inhibitor performance. Surface active, amphiphilic inhibitor molecules have a high affinity for accumulation at the oil-water interface. The dispersed droplets may constitute a very large surface area. When the surface area exceeds 1 m2 /liter (order of magnitude) they can deplete a critical amount of corrosion inhibitor from the corrosive aqueous phase. This “parasitic” consumption of inhibitor constitutes a potential corrosion risk and leads to increased inhibitor demand.
