In the off shore oil and gas industry wirelines are used as single wires for downhole service applications. For this purpose beside high mechanical strengths and lengths without welds, corrosion resistance against the aggressive sour gas conditions of the wells is required. These requirements are met by wirelines made of alloy 926 (UNS N08926), which are well established in the oil and gas industry. The even higher corrosion resistance against sour gas conditions and the mechanical behaviour of alloy 31 (UNS N08031), a new developed Fe-Ni-Cr-Mo alloy with additions of N, makes this alloy a new candidate for wirelines.

This paper presents the requirements for wirelines and shows, why alloy 926 and alloy 31 are well suited for this application.
