Abstract
The use of 17-4PH stainless steel for fabrication of downhole well testing pressure components and sample containers has been a common practice for over 13 years. This paper will describe field history demonstrating incident free service in highly sour oilfield environments. This type of equipment is generally used in exploratory wells with short exposure times from a few days to less than two weeks. The operating stresses are below 60% YS in almost all cases. Sample containers constructed with 17-4PH have been used to store highly sour oil for many years. Laboratory analysis has shown there to be no corrosion or degradation of the material during the storage period. Transportable sample containers constructed from 17-4PH stainless steel have been used successfully to transport pressurized sour oils samples from well site to laboratory on a global basis for many years.
