Abstract
This paper focuses on the gouge resistance research of pipeline external coatings. A recent inspection survey for external coating integrity before backfill revealed that most mechanical damage is from nicks. The external coating will most probably be gouged during pipeline construction. The researchers propose to promote the integrity of external coatings, extend service life of the pipeline and enhance the coating quality control level. The research clarifies the causal factors of gouge damage and calculates the reliable thickness of coatings. Developing the theoretical ideal thickness of external coatings, one of the aims of coating system research, is indicated. The research results will improve awareness of the mechanical properties of external coatings and ensure the integrity of coating and service life of pipelines. Therefore, the research will show how the cost of constructions can be reduced and how the coating system can be modified.
