Abstract

Fiberglass composites designed for chemical process equipment are generally engineered with a corrosion barrier and a structural layer that will vary in thickness based on its intended use. This paper will focus only on the corrosion barrier, sometimes referred to as a liner, and its various types and intended uses. Three typical types of liner functionality will be covered:

  1. chemical resistance

  2. electrical conductivity

  3. abrasion resistance

Without addressing these requirements, optimization of the service life of FRP equipment will not be achieved. Furthermore, neglecting liner considerations could result in a considerable reduction in the structural integrity of the part, similar to under engineering the composite. Corrosion liner considerations are therefore very important in the design and construction of FRP equipment.
