Abstract
The purpose of fireproofing is to buy time during a fire. Fireproofing provides a passive form of loss control with the principal value being realized during the early stages of a fire. This paper provides an overview of fireproofing materials commonly used by the petrochemical industry. Case histories of fireproofing performance are reviewed. The development of a Company Engineering Standard is described.
