Abstract
This paper proposes a methodology for integrating the information contained in maintenance reports and related documents into a framework for the creation of knowledge-based systems. A study of the failures of aircraft landing gear components served to guide the elicitation of expertise with an established model of expected knowledge. This approach is particularly useful when the expertise is complex and the experts scarce, as is presently the case for the expertise on failures of aircraft components.
