Abstract
This paper describes a model for the simulation of environmental changes within a stress corrosion crack under anaerobic conditions in a near neutral pH, carbon dioxide rich solution. Model simulations predict that a mildly acidic solution is produced after only 0.1 hours of exposure to the test solution. This pH decrease is primarily due to the formation of FeCO3 which alters the carbonate bicarbonate equilibrium, causing a lowering of pH. Once the concentrations of the carbonate species have been reduced in the crack, the exterior surface system can be considered to be in a differential carbonation system with the initial crack.
