The effect of fumed zinc oxide additions on the stress corrosion crack initiation and growth of sensitized type 304 stainless steel (SS) were studied in 550°F water containing various amounts of dissolved oxygen. The addition of zinc at levels varying from 3 ppb to 100 ppb showed some benefit in mitigating both crack initiation and growth. Depending on the type of test used, the degree of benefit appear to vary in the broad range from 25 to 55%. The data show that a considerable benefit can be derived by reducing the electrochemical corrosion potential (ECP) of type 304 SS to < -0.110 V (SHE).
