Perforation corrosion of the door hems was investigated after 10-year field exposure in Detroit. Pitting corrosion was less severe on the hem which was more tightly constructed and in which more amount of zinc corrosion products were found. Laboratory CCT revealed that when corrosion products such as ZnO were stagnant in the hem, rate of pitting corrosion was reduced. This is because dissolution of zinc coating makes the stagnant solution in the hem alkaline, which helps prevent corrosion of the substrate. In this context, zinc coating plus tight setup for the hem are recommended to delay perforation.
