Pipeline coatings can be classified into several types, among them are polyethylene, both extruded and tape coatings, fusion bonded epoxy (FBE), coal tar enamel(CTE) and the three layer systems. The laboratory tests used to characterize these pipeline coatings are assumed to predict their performance in the ground over a 30+ year period. The three test methods described here involve measurements assumed to predict in-ground performance of the coating: Impact strength, cathodic disbonding and adhesion (peel force). These laboratory and field test methods will be discussed and their value as predictive tests will be assessed by correlation of laboratory results with those in the field. As a rule in this paper, only tape coatings will be discussed, however, occasionally, data for other coating systems will be given.
