Due to its inherent corrosion resistance, tantalum is used to handle aggressive chemicals in the chemical processing industry. Two primary modes of applications are as liners inside steel vessels and as wrought products.

This paper discusses the electrochemical properties responsible for tantalum’s corrosion resistant behavior. It also describes the processing methods for both the lining and the wrought products. A brief review of the past industrial applications and recent developments follows.

The role of emerging technologies such as coatings (plasma, CVD) instead of liners is also briefly reviewed.
