Experience with various carbon bed absorbers illustrates the unique challenges faced in selection of appropriate materials of construction. The conditions are most aggressive during carbon regeneration, when bed temperatures reach 120°C, at elevated organic and chloride concentrations. The galvanic effect of the activated carbon must be considered in making the appropriate material selection. Titanium alloys are the best metallic materials of construction for carbon bed adsorbers that are subject to oxidizing acidic conditions. One of the major challenges facing titanium alloys is the corrosion of weldments. This is illustrated by the experience in the hydrochloric acid stripping columns and piping.
