Abstract
Two case studies dealing with the deterioration of conventionally reinforced and post-tensioned concrete balconies due to reinforcing steel corrosion are presented. Each case study includes the results of a detailed concrete and corrosion condition evaluation followed by the repair and protection recommendations made. Some of the factors that contributed to the deterioration of the balconies included inadequate concrete cover, presence of excessive chlorides and moisture near the reinforcing steel or cables, marginal concrete quality, lack of sheathing on the cables, poorly sealed post pockets, and cables damaged during the installation of railings. The rehabilitation recommendations ranged from simply repairing cracks and damaged concrete only to concrete repairs followed by installation of a cathodic protection system.
