High temperature blast-type erosion tests were conducted for preoxidized/presulfidized T2, 347H, and 310HCbN steels at 500 and 700°C in N2. Preoxidation/presulfidation conditions were determined to simulate scales formed on in-bed heat exchanger of PFBC boiler. Erodent velocity and density were varied to estimate the surface fracture energy of oxide/sulfide scales. Oxide scales formed on 347H and 310HCbN steels at 700°C were more protective than the oxide scale formed on T2 steel at 500°C. "Sulfide" scales were more fragile than the oxide scales.
