A fast, economical and structurally reliable method for attachment of fasteners in marine environments has long been sought by engineers and marine structure owners. A new portable friction stud welding system is one possible solution.

The paper will present an explanation of friction welding, a description of portable friction stud welding equipment, as well as laboratory test results evidencing the integrity of this method of material joining. A method of providing improved electrical continuity is also presented.
