Abstract
Antifreeze solutions are needed in many water based "closed" HVAC systems in buildings. Physical properties, toxicity, environmental consequences, government regulations, and corrosivity are all important attributes which must be considered. A closed system can have different corrosion protection criteria which may be much more stringent than an open system such as a cooling tower. Because of government regulations on ethylene glycol based fluids, various types of fluids and inhibitors were evaluated as potential substitutes. None of these performed as well as existing inhibited glycol-based fluids from a corrosion standpoint. Localized corrosion and build-up of corrosion products was a significant problem. The need for a corrosion test method designed for closed HVAC system fluid comparison is identified.
