It is hypothesized that sludge consolidation is promoted by chemical reactions involving the various sludge constituents, although the hardness of the final product will also depend on the total porosity. Oxidizing conditions and higher temperatures produce a harder sludge. The precipitation of Zn2SiO4--a potential binding agent--may also promote sludge consolidation. Several solutions to prevent sludge consolidation are suggested.
