Various nondestructive sampling techniques for Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy are capable of probing the molecular details of corrosion products, and corrosion protective films. Examples of the successful use of various sampling techniques for characterizing amorphous, microcrystalline, oily and polymeric paint interphases are discussed. The unique strengths and limitations of various sampling techniques with respect to the macroscopic structure of the interphases and the molecular details of interest are also explored.
