Frequently high-performance corrosion-resistant alloys are specified for severe sour gas wellhead applications where high strength and long term reliability are required. Historically, alloy 625 weld surfacing (overlaying) has been used where severe corrosion is expected. In such severe environments, high levels of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, as well as high chloride contents, lead to potential pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking problems. During the past several years, service temperatures have increased to the point were alloy 625 has reportedly failed. A cost effective alternative, for providing superior corrosion resistance for such severe sour wellhead equipment, is to use HASTELLOY C-22 welding filler material for surfacing applications.
